Ecce homo - dance, text and music

3 April 2026 19:00 - 9:00 pm
Bestwig mountain monastery
Concert

On Good Friday evening, the Bergkloster Bestwig invites you to an unusual cultural evening: dance, saxophone and organ meet the Passion story.

Felix Grützner walks the Way of the Cross differently. He dances it. For over 30 years, the Düsseldorf dancer and doctor of art history has been organising church services and funeral ceremonies with dance - even at the funeral service for his own father.

On Good Friday, 3 April 2026, it will be open from 7:30 pm at the Bergkloster Bestwig. The programme is called „Ecce homo - dance, text and music“. At his side: saxophonist Elke Schroeder and organist Heiner Bartsch.

The Way of the Cross as a human journey

Grützner does not approach the Passion as a historical play. „The Way of the Cross contains what people also experience in their lives,“ he says. „A path that leads through the darkness of human existence, through suffering and pain, but which also allows hope to shine through.“

He sees dance as an inner empathy: „I look for my own emotions within myself and try to carry them beyond the purely individual in movement. Dancing can open up spaces for individual emotional perception.“

Grützner, born in Düsseldorf in 1964, studied classical ballet and modern dance. He works at ALPHA, the NRW contact point for palliative care and hospice work, and teaches at the University of Bonn.

Good Friday evening at the Bergkloster has a long tradition. „Ecce homo“ promises a moving programme - both literally and figuratively.
